I like a good Tarkovsky flick. I really do. I especially love the ones where nothing happens. Detractors of Tarkovsky will say that I just described all his films but really, there's something amazing about a film in which nothing happens and where the lack of action isn't annoying. Like Stalker. Nothing happens and it would be much, much worse if something did happen. So, back to Tarkovsky. Today a bunch of undergrads were hanging outside my office discussing Tarkovsky. Why is it always so painful to listen to people discuss him? And why does it always feel like the people discussing the film have watched the film but failed to notice a damn thing about it?
