Well, now that the Village Voice has decided to report on legislation that threatens intellectual freedom on university campuses in the U.S., maybe more people will worry about their civil rights. Frankly, the only threats to intellectual freedom that someone on a university campus should encounter are members of the administration who believe that all departments should be able to raise the same sort of funds as biochemistry, people who have read too much Derrida (it was all said in Czech fifty years earlier), and people who scoff at Derrida without having read him. Anyhow, people in my field have been discussing this for eons already. I didn't read the entire article, so if it's rubbish, sorry, I'm a half-assed scholar sometimes. -Zh.
