I went for beer with a few of my colleagues and numerous friends who had been my colleagues before they smartened up and got the hell out. After much discussion, it was decided that the only statistic that my department is going to be able to use to promote itself in the future is the student-teacher ratio. Not for any good reasons, though, but because everyone is getting the hell out and warning others to stay the hell away.
